The origins of the term 1972 Summit Series have become a source for debate.

While the tournament is fondly and immortally remembered by that catchy moniker, it was never officially called that.

So who dubbed the series as the Summit Series?

Scouring through the archives of the Globe and Mail, I was able to find the earliest recorded reference by that newspaper. It occurred in the following Dick Beddoes column, courtesy of the August 26, 1972 issue.

While the article may be the earliest reference I can find, it is by no means a definitive answer as to who first coined the term Summit Series.
